Many English words are based on the names of gods and goddesses from ancient Greek and Roman mythology. In these units you will have a chance to explore the background to some of them. Words sometimes change meaning over a long period of time. For example, the ancient Greeks believed that Calliope was the goddess in charge of epic poetry and eloquence. Today when people hear her name, they usually think of a loud musical instrument found at amusement parks and fairs. Each unit at this site has a worksheet you can print out to provide evidence of what you have learned. As you read, answer the questions on the worksheet. Be sure to put your name on it before you hand it in. Have fun as you learn where some of our words come from! |
