Mt. Vesuvius, Italy?

In A.D. 63, Mt. Vesuvius erupted, killing people in the nearby city of Pompeii and burying the city under ash and lava. Archaeologists have excavated the ruins and learned a great deal about Roman life at the time.

Since then Mt. Vesuvius has erupted several times, most recently in March 1944.
